Just had to share this inkle loom woven ornament. I am enjoying this Baltic style pick-up.

OK, here is the finished guitar strap.This was a fun project. I couldn't find 13 pattern thread letters, so I had to go to my crochet books and this is what I came up with.

Inkle Guitar Strap

Well, I went and did it! I wove a guitar strap.

Now I will have to find someone I know who need a pink-brown-ish strap.

I also see that I should have made it wider to fit the hardware better. Always more to learn!!!

70% bamboo 30% cotton

Yum! I found some "Fiber-lady, Makicot" yarn at Fiber Daze in Mount Vernon, MO that I thought would make a great inkle band. What do you think? It says it is 14 wraps per inch and the sett for weaving is 8 epi. Because I didn't have to change colors, it went on the loom very quickly. There are four threads of black carpet warp on the edges and I am weaving with that same black.

Do not know what I will use this for, just enjoying the color play and the relaxing weaving.

Color and Pick-Up Inkle Weaving

Would you believe that the orange band and the bottom turquoise band are the same pattern? 

Well, they are. I have the three center pattern threads on the orange band a very dark brown with metallic while on the bottom turquoise band, I am using two blended threads of turquoise as all the pattern threads. I am having fun changing up the colors while using the same draft.

An Inkle of Bateman

Weaving is slow going this month. I am working on a two shaft and an eight shaft project. I really got interested in weaving pick-up on my inkle loom. Thanks to my friend Anita who let the "duh" moment enter my brain. She is a great teacher!

So this loom is beside my chair and I can weave while watching TV. 

Another project I have going is some yardage on eight shafts with some Bateman Combination Weave. I am using some Patons Metallic ribbon yarn for this. I have a red warp (cotton) with the pattern thread 63% nylon, 28% acrylic, and 9% wool. The tabby is the same as the warp.

  I should be able to get at least 4 yards of yardage woven. Excited to see how this looks off the loom. If you see my threading error, just look away! 

Inkle Loom Workshop

It was a very lively and sometimes quite workshop where we were learning about pick-up inkle weaving. Anita had her hands full with 13 of us trying our hand at this awesome looking technique. But I think at the end of the day, we all got it!

Inkle Loom Pick-up

Working on my pick-up skills.

My dictionary does not have the word 'inkle' in it, but it does have 'inkling'. So I guess I am weaving with "the slightest notion" of what I am doing. Or to quote my dictionary "I haven't an inkling of what you mean".

According to Anita Apinis-Herman her dictionary says the word "inkle" is an old English word for a linen band or drawstring. She has a really nice article online about Latvian Band Weaving Using Letters.

More Inkle Loom Fun

Weaving on an inkle loom my DH (dear husband) made for me! This is a closed sided loom. It took a while to remember how to thread it, but with the help of DH 'we got her done'. This is just simple pick-up without any 'dropped' threads. I am having a rainbow of fun!

Inkle Loom Fun

I am still playing around with my inkle loom. I have a monograph I found in my personal library that has been a lot of fun to explore. "Handwoven Decorative Trim, An introduction to weaving passementerie trims" by Robyn Spady.  This monograph is an excellent place to explore decorative trims. If you don't have an inkle loom, any loom with two shafts will work.

One warp but using two wefts. Both wefts are white to blend into the edge color. 

This monograph introduces weaving with one warp and two, three, and four pattern wefts. She shows a great way to weave looped and cut fringe. There is even some information on adding beads. A great resource if you can find it.

Beginning Inkle Program

Anita has started us on a Inkle workshop by helping us get set up. Only a few of us have woven on an inkle loom, and some of us have forgotten how to do it. Anita will be  showing us how to do pick-up on our looms. We have thick and thin warp threads. We have pattern threads and background threads. But just for today, we will warp our looms. Next month Anita will show us how to do the weaving part.

More Inkle

I am brushing up on my Inkle Loom skills. While looking through my library I found this bookmark in the Helene Bress "Inkle Weaving" book (copyright 1975, 1990). I also found "Weaving Inkle Bands" by Harriet Tidball (Shuttle Craft Monograph 27, 1969).

Gosh, I think I had better read these again since I don't remember how I did this I KNIT SOCKS bookmark!!
