Sampling Almost Done

I have been working on this summer and winter on opposites without tabby for a while now, and I don't remember some of the things I have tried. I need to finish up this little bit of warp and then cut off and see what I "gots".  If you look real close you can see some of the floats. That is in the area where I will cut my samples apart, so I am not to worried about them. I think my weaving was correct, a shaft was sticking.

Now I like this. White warp, blue and dark blue wefts.

I Buy You Toys

I buy you toys and buy you toys and all you want is the cardboard box!

Somewhere there are some really neat markers, but when don't want to take time to find where you "put it"..... improvise. Paper clip to the rescue!

I needed a hat to play golf with my new golf clubs. Thank you DH, they are great!

Just Four Minutes More

Ah............. just four samples more.......... then I can move on. It looks like I will not have enough warp left for a scarf and I will have to decide if I want to tie-on or what. Here is my draft with notes I have been making as I have been weaving. I even remembered to measure the on-loom width and length of each sample. Recording my adventures with my weaving makes me a better weaver. Or so I think.

Smores Colors with S&W

I am having just to much fun with this. Here are two examples of summer and winter on opposites without tabby. Here I have kept the black and green wefts and now have a red warp and a blue warp.

I think you can click to view bigger.

S&W and More Color

I was wondering what the draft I am working on would look like if the warp was red, the pattern wefts were black and green.....and I did some dancing on the treadles too.

So this is single two-tie on opposites without tabby. Only two shuttles.  Of course it would look much different in the actual cloth version. And squint your eyes and think what the back might look like. Hummmm!

more Summer and Winter On OW/OT

Made up my own short hand. On OW/OT..... on opposites without tabby! Just can't get enough of this? Who doesn't love pink and green? (Let me know if you figure out how to pronounce OW/OT.)

Well, I am trying to weave 22 samples. This loom is being sneaky... dropping a shaft and hiding the fact from me. But hopefully I have that all figured out. 6 finished and only 16 to go!

Trouble Found in Tied Weave Land

A lesson learned is a lesson earned. Keep one eye on the prize. Don't play in the street. Wash behind your ears. If at once you don't succeed, try-try again. All good thing to consider.

I found where one of my tie hooks had not only come off it wasn't even causing any problems. But it has been fixed and hopefully I will be able to weave my 22 samples and then move on.

One of these views is the front the other is the back. But since this is summer and winter on opposites with out tabby, it's your guess which side will be the true front. There is no law that says I have to weave this face up!

Big Trouble in Tied Weave Land

I wanted to say: Big Trouble in Little China (one of my favorite movies).... but

Yikes!

I have been weaving samples and now that I have turned them over to see the back, I see YIKES !  It seems I have a tie-up error - maybe. At this rate, I will have to tie on again to have enough warp to weave my scarf.

Tomorrow

Cooking, shopping, napping...... will weave tomorrow !

( I did cook some muffins, and I bought two shirts, and I took a nap. Very busy today. )

Summer and Winter On Opposites Without Tabby

Single Two-Tie (S2T) is another name for Summer and Winter. With this eight shaft threading, I am weaving on opposites without tabby. This sample is to let you see the difference between tabby and background and pattern.

This is what tabby and background looks like on my S2T warp. The top solid pink and black rows are tabby. Over one - under one. The next pink rows are solid pattern. The next pink/black rows is showing you pattern (pink square) and pink/black background.  The solid black is what happened when you don't use two different colors. Your pattern doesn't show. And of course those last few rows are tabby again.

This is one of those things that is easier to understand in person. So hopefully I haven't confused you too much.

Tabby and Background - S2T

I didn't have time to sit at the loom today but did some weaving thinking. Here is what the difference is between weaving background and weaving tabby on summer and winter.

The black/green is showing how to weave background texture. The red/blue is what tabby looks like. Because of the way I have done my tie-up, I need to step on two treadles at the same times, sometimes.

Background Texture

Still playing around with the Single Two-Tie draft on eight shafts.  Another name is Summer and Winter on opposites without tabby.

With this draft I am not weaving tabby, but if I were, I would treadle 1 Vs. 2+3. All the pattern shafts Vs. the two tie-downs.

But since I am weaving 'on opposites' I do not want to weave tabby. If I want a solid row of background texture, I will weave these treadles:
2 =  tie-down one
1+2  =  tie-down one, and all pattern shafts
3 =  tie-down two
1+3 =  tie-down two, and all pattern shafts

I will repeat for a total of 8 picks. Yes, I am stepping on two treadles at the same time.

If you look real close it is different than tabby. Tabby is over one and under one. This is BACKGROUND texture.

Summer and Winter- Pink and Green

Pink and green or is that green and pink? After I have woven enough for this to flip over the breast beam, maybe I can get a photo of the back side. I am weaving summer and winter (S2T) on opposites without tabby.

I am not sure why I keep buying variegated yarns. I guess it's a hold over from my crocheting days. It sounded good in my head, but doesn't quite reach what I was thinking. Since both the green and pink are the same size here (bamboo 7), the motif is a little elongated for my tastes.

Now this might be a bit better. A scarf is what I am thinking with this design. I am making samples here, but if I were weaving the scarf, I would just keep making the pink flowers down the whole length.

This sample is pink bamboo 7 and green bamboo 12 with the warp as 12/2 rayon. This is making the motif much better. The drape should improve too.

S2T = single two tie......... summer and winter!

Sampling More Tied Weave

I am weaving on a single two-tie warp. I am treadling on opposites without tabby. The warp is white, one pattern weft is turquoise chenille and black bamboo.

Here I am trying out some 20/2 variegated cotton and black bamboo. I like this motif. I think I will continue with it. I just need to find a color/thickness combo I like.

Tied Weave Problems

I have two photo's for you today. One is my back yard and the other is what happens when you don't get your tension correct on every single thread.
Dashing through the snow.... I don't think so. No dashing going on around here.

OK, I will fix this, take a break, and start over tomorrow.

Back to The Single Two-Tie

I have been thinking and am giving this single two-tie threading another try. I am weaving on opposites without tabby. I think that makes it taquete. I am using the 10/2 bamboo for both pattern wefts. I think they might need to be bigger to cover better.

Tie-down 1+ shaft 4
Tie-down 1+ shaft 5
Tie-down 2+ shaft 4
Tie-down 2+ shaft 5

Then I move onto the next two on opposite treadles.

Here I have used tabby. Doesn't look right.

Here I am only weaving on opposites, no tabby involved.

A Little About This Slow Cloth

I am calling this 'slow cloth' because it is s-l-o-w. First I have to find a photo, print it on some fancy silk, cut it, put it in the correct shed..... And you should only cut one strip at a time so you don't put the wrong strip in out of order. I ordered this silk from Dharma Trading. (I have had good luck with this company.) It comes as a roll and you cut your size and send it through your ink jet printer.

I need to put on a different warp, and continue to 'try' to get that ticking warp - warped!  I am playing with Theo Moorman, ticking, and single two-tie. Three looms, three techniques! Fun! Fun! Fun!

More Slow Cloth

I don't think I have this Theo Moorman Technique figured out. I shouldn't have waited so long after my class with Nadine Sanders. I had to give it a good rap to get the background to look right. But that made the inlay 'smashed' . If you squint and know what the original image is, you can kinda see it.

This is an image of a blue ceramic jug with a pink towel.

Slow Cloth!

Just when you thought I was getting that ticking warp on the loom, you find I have been playing around with the Theo Moorman technique. A photo has been printed on silk on my inkjet printer, cut apart and woven. This is what I call slow cloth!

Still Snowed In

Just staying off the snowy streets and letting the brain wander. Here is a list of some songs I like (in no certain order). Do you remember them?

1. Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes - Paul Simon
2. Sounds of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel
3. Sailing- Christopher Cross
4. Down to The River To Pray - Alison Krauss
5. Hey Jude -Beatles
6. I Can Only Imagine - MercyMe
7. Classical Gas - Mason Williams
8. Lonely Bull - Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass
9. Star Spangled Banner - Jimmy Hendrix
10. I Want It That Way - Backstreet Boys

Sometimes it is the words and sometimes it is just the music its self. Some songs are a reminder of a person or place I knew. Some songs just make me smile. How about "Mack The Knife" or "Where Have All The Young Men Gone?" Or "Stormy Weather" or ....... Some songs I remember who was singing, some I just remember the words, and some I can't even remember the title.
Inside looking out.

Tick Tock Ticking

Despite the snow lulling me into just reading and drinking coffee all day, I did get some 'sleighing' of the reed done. Or is that sleying? Just a bit of snowed-in humor! Sorry, couldn't help myself.

The book I just finished was "The Lincoln Lawyer" by Michael Connell. I thought it was a good read. (I also like his Harry Bosch character.)

Snow Ticking

Like the rest of the Midwest, I have a bit of snow. Looks like I will be able to finish reading that book and maybe get the loom warped before I try to get out. This is the ticking warp I have had waiting to get onto a loom.

I just wish I had some of Dianne's bacon wrapped dates. Maybe I will have to fire up the oven and make some myself. They won't be as good, but they will be yummy!

Guild Party part 3

Now I will show you some of the great gifts that everyone got at the 7th Annual Diva Christmas Party. (The book was my gift from Janice-Thanks Janice!!)

Now that the fun and food and gifts are over, it's time to start thinking about next year. What weave structures will we explore? What color will the big hit at the yearly dye workshop? Who will revisit a guild program someone gave last year? Who will bring more show and tell than Ann? Will everyone figure out how to weave with rags? If so, what will they make? And who will be weaving kitchen towels? Did I hear someone says "Stripes and Plain Weave for 2014"??????

Guild Party part 2

More photos from the Diva Christmas Party 2013.

One of the gifts I didn't take a picture of was a DVD from Kayla. She had taken the handouts from our Diva programs and scanned them. What a great idea. Thanks Kayla.

Guild Party part 1

Yeah, the weather cooperated and I was able to attend the Diva Party! This was our sixth Christmas together. Gosh, how times "flies"!! Sit back and enjoy some of the sights. I didn't write down who gave what to whom, but all gifts were weaving related. I got a book and a hand felted button from Janice.
