A Little Taquete with Anita

According to "Weft-Faced Pattern Weaves Tabby to Taquete" by Nancy Arthur Hoskins,"...taquete is a weft-faced compound tabby weave that is also known as---weft-faced Summer and Winter weave, weft-faced polychrome Summer and Winter weave (without tabby) and weft-faced two-tie unit weave."

Now I think I am going to be weaving Taquete.

Here is a small history lesson.
According to Summer and Winter, A Weave for All Seasons by Donna Sullivan - "summer and winter polychrome is 3 blocks of single two-tie and you rotate two or more colors of pattern weft with a tabby weft"

According to Harriet Tidball, Shuttle Craft Guild Monograph Nineteen 1966, "two differently colored pattern wefts follow each tabby shot."

Well, what is it if you don't use tabby?

Lilian Whipple says in her book, Summer and Winter to Taquete (A Lesson In How To Design And Weave In Two Basic Structures)  - "My definition of Taquete is summer and winter woven without the tabby thread." The tie down threads ( 1 + 2) must always alternate and all pattern blocks must be woven as pattern or floats will appear on the top or bottom side of the fabric."

So now, what I am doing is this... I am weaving using three colors in a set rotation alternating each of three different pattern shafts. I have 12 picks I must do before I can move onto the next block. There is no set three pattern shaft to use or what order to pick them... so I am having fun designing on the loom to find my blocks.

My sequence using three colors (pattern wefts):
1+ 1st pattern - mauve
1+ 2nd pattern - rose
1+ 3 pattern - turquoise

2+ 1st pattern - mauve
2+ 2nd pattern - rose
2+ 3rd pattern - turquoise

1+ 1st pattern - mauve
1+ 2nd pattern - rose
1+ 3 pattern - turquoise

2+ 1st pattern - mauve
2+ 2nd pattern - rose
2+ 3rd pattern - turquoise

I really like how this looks like up close and personal. Since the light pink is much thicker than the dark pink, I am anxious to see how this will wash up. Will it have a 3D texture?

Starting Second Half Of Scarf

While weaving away, I was thinking I read in the 'Weft-Faced Pattern Weaves Tabby to Taquete' by Nancy Arthur Hoskins, that there was another way to weave this. An alternate way if you will.

I have been weaving
Pattern A+ tie 1
Pattern B+ tie 1
Pattern A+ tie 2
Pattern B+ tie 2

Her other way would be:
Pattern A+ tie 1
Pattern A+ tie 2
Pattern B+ tie 1
Pattern B+ tie 2

Pattern A is the opposite of Pattern B. I have 5 such pattern combinations. Here are my pattern treadles. Each 'set' has an A an B.

                                                    AB   AB     AB    AB    AB
I am not sure what the difference would be, but maybe I will try that if I have any warp left to play with.

A Little Weaving

Not much progress on the scarf. I am trying to get those Yoga Socks done. But I did do a few repeats to reach the 11 inch mark.

According to the book Weft-Faced Pattern Weaves Tabby to Taquete by Nancy A. Hoskins "taquete, a weft-faced compound weave that is also knows as - weft-faced summer and winter weave, weft-faced polychrome summer and winter (without tabby), and weft faced two-tie unit weave." I have a copyright book of 1992, but I believe the book has been re-printed. 

Errors Fixed, Scarf continues

OK, now I am back on track. I am using a mirror to check the back side as I weave. But I will keep my eye on that Polar Vortex that everyone is talking about.

Now I don't want to cause any scarey thoughts, but you need to know that Summer and Winter on opposites without tabby is also called TAQUETE.  Now you know!

Sampling More Tied Weave

I am weaving on a single two-tie warp. I am treadling on opposites without tabby. The warp is white, one pattern weft is turquoise chenille and black bamboo.

Here I am trying out some 20/2 variegated cotton and black bamboo. I like this motif. I think I will continue with it. I just need to find a color/thickness combo I like.

Tied Weave Problems

I have two photo's for you today. One is my back yard and the other is what happens when you don't get your tension correct on every single thread.

Dashing through the snow.... I don't think so. No dashing going on around here.

OK, I will fix this, take a break, and start over tomorrow.

Back to The Single Two-Tie

I have been thinking and am giving this single two-tie threading another try. I am weaving on opposites without tabby. I think that makes it taquete. I am using the 10/2 bamboo for both pattern wefts. I think they might need to be bigger to cover better.

Then I move onto the next two on opposite treadles.

Here I have used tabby. Doesn't look right.
 



Here I am only weaving on opposites, no tabby involved.

Taquete - Gold, Pink and Blue

Still trying to find my colorway. I am using gold, pink, and blue here. This makes it very plain that there are two blocks. The colors are trying fool your eyes, but if you squint, you can see the two blocks.

I have this color out my kitchen window. Now isn't this a nice color palette?

Stash Colors and Taquete

 

 

"There are more colors in the rainbow than colors in my stash" That sounds like a famous quote, but maybe not! Or, I could have just made it famous.  

 

These are the colors I have in bamboo. My new warp is white rayon. So I am now juggling the colors back and forth to see just what I like. I am using three colors in each color stripe.

 

For example:   first combo- gold-pink-blue

        next color combo-  blue-green-purple



        next color combo- purple-pompeii- blue
and so on.......

Taquete Sample (another one)

Here I have a sample of the tie-up I told you about yesterday.
3-4, 5-6, 7-8 pattern treadles.
Weaving the different shafts together like this:
     1 + 3-4......purple
     1 + 5-6......pink
     1+ 7-8.......green
        2 + 3-4......purple
        2 + 5-6......pink
        2 + 7-8......green
This is the first color combination as you see at the bottom of this photo. I then switch the color order, I do not switch the treadling order. Depending on which color I throw first color determines what color that block is. It looks like a lots is going one, but it's really just two blocks even thought I have used six pattern shafts.

You can see, a lot of color blending is going on too. At certain angles the green+purple looks gray while the pink+green looks orange. Interesting!

Taquete Tie-Up for Three Colors

I don't think I had the correct tie-up on the samples I just finished. I went back and read the book Weft-Faced Pattern Weaves Tabby to Taquete by Nancy A Hoskins. I am not to share shafts. So I will have pattern treadles 3-4, 5-6, 7-8. I will still have my three colors, and will keep the treadling rotation throughout. If I want something to happen, I will need to change the color rotation or even different colors. (At least with this threading.)

Just a few inches of warp left, so did some more sampling. Threw in some blue this time. Gosh these colors make a person smile.

Now that I have the general idea on how this works, I "might" try some different tie-ups. But first I will need to wind a warp and tie on again. Stay tuned................... We may be here for a while.

Taquete and Color

Did someone say taquete and color went hand in hand. I believe when my friend Linda gave her program on Taquete that is exactly what she said. Here I am using three colors in rotation.  (I gave you the threading on yesterday's post....)  My three colors are orange, green and purple.

I have three different ways I have rotated the colors. You can see it best when you look at the large blocks.
orange, green, purple
green, orange, purple
purple, orange green

How about this? I have changed the tie-up...again. Now I will see what I can do with three colors.

 

I am still using a typical single two tie draft, but I am not weaving it as such. I will not use tabby (unless I want a hem area). I have set up my treadling to step on two treadles at the same time. I can see how having a computer aided loom would be very helpful with this structure.

I am weaving three different treadling blocks but using only two colors. I have a nice textile, but don't know if's really taquete, I will keep reading the book Weft-Faced Pattern Weaves  Tabby to Taquete, by Nancy Arthur Hoskins.

 

This is what I have so far...........................................................



I have woven: tie-down 1 with pattern treadle 4

                        tie-down 1 with pattern treadle 5

                        tie-down 2 with pattern treadle 4

                        tie-down 2 with pattern treadle 5

                       

I then moved over to pattern treadles 6 and 7

                       tie-down 1 with pattern treadle 7

I then moved over to pattern treadles 8 and 9

I alternated my colors orange-blue-orange-blue throughout.

Anyone for Taquete?

 

This is the THREADING I have been using for the single two tie scarf and the 2Tied woven shibori scarf. Well..... keeping the same threading, lets see what happens if I change the TIE-UP and do some Taquete.

If I understand that Taquete is: a weft-face two-tie unit weave, or a weft-faced polychrome summer and winter weave (without tabby) or a weft-faced compound tabby weave, I begin to understand. (well maybe-maybe not!)

I am weaving with two colors, on opposites, without tabby. My warp is white. Hummmm. Let me sample a while and let you know what I think.

This is your basic single two-tie threading. But do not weave as traditional summer and winter.
It would be threaded using these units: 1-3-2-3, 1-4-2-4, 1-5-2-5, 1-6-2-6, 1-7-2-7, 1-8-2-8
I still need my two tie up treadles on shafts one and two.
I don't need tabby for this, unless I might need a header or hem area. But the actual weaving of taquete does not use tabby.
I will still need weave each pattern shaft with tie-down one and tie-down two.
My tie-up three pair of shaft combinations (on opposite).

I have some white warp I will sample on first.
And there is more to know.... but that is why I am sampling!!!
