Loopers to the Rescus

Here is another example of using loopers. This was a post from October 10, 2013.

I have used my nylon potholder loopers to help me while threading the heddles. They don't slip or slide. Maybe we should change their name to 'weaving nylon choke ties that also help when threading the reed and heddles'.

Loopers Bear repeating

Yes, I know it is isn't a bear.... I was attempting to be funny (sigh).

When using choke ties, remember that if you use the looper method they really must be nylon! The cotton ones will not work. They are reusable and come in lots of pretty colors. And if they don't work for you, you can always make a pot holder.

This tip comes from my good friend the "warpped weaver" (yes he spells it that way), Jeff. Thanks Jeff!

More Winding and Loopers

This shot from the "loom room" window tells it all! It's cold and rainy and icy!!! But a good day to wind a warp.

This is where I wind my warps. As you can see, when I first started...not so long ago...I had to remember where my cross should be. And since the board is attached to the wall, I can pin important info there.

I am using nylon loopers as my choke ties. The cotton loopers make great rugs and pot holders, but not very good choke ties. These nylon ones don't slip and they are easy to remove as I am winding on the warp.

This is a warp for a set of towels. The weave structure will be summer and winter. Well, maybe. I may change my mind about that once I decide to put this warp on the loom. ;-)

Working On Projects - Ticking

I am still winding warp for some ticking I want to weave. My draft calls for 786 ends!!! So I am taking my time!!

I just love using these nylon potholder loopers that my friend Jeff told me about. Almost as good as cream in my coffee!!!

They don't slip, slide, and they keep my warp tidy.

More Loopers

I have found some more uses for those nylon loopers.

I use them for choke ties when making my warp chains.

I also use them to tie onto the front beam.

I use them to tie the raddle down........

Thinking Heddles

OK, it's a good thing I thought about all the heddle moving and/or joggling... I think it would be 'way better' to just use the Macomber. I have lots of heddles on shafts one through four. I even need to move some off to the side out of the way. Whew! I wasn't looking forward to all that moving or joggling or thinking...

I only have 320 more ends to wind before I can start threading the "Ladey Washington" draft. Don't you just love how Weaver Rose has spelled 'ladey'? He and I must have gone to the same Spelling School.

Winding Warp

Winding a six hundred plus warp will take a little time. I only have the one cone of yarn and I don't mind winding one tread at a time. It gives me time to see each thread and know I have my cross correct. And using the colorful nylon loopers as choke ties helps the job be fun.

I use a kite stick to keep my threads in order and under tension. I have told about this before, so if interested, click on 'kite stick' on my subject list.

My Office

At the Office

Some people have a desk and chair. Some people have a long table. I have a warping board where I also attach things so I can find them. I have a sett chart, a list of sizes for woven items (towels, napkins, etc.), the 'sheep' my great-neice made for me, a photo I took I really like of my weaving, and of course some of my friends handmade cards, and also the guilds list of programs for 2012.  Oh and yes, my Weaving Diva things.

This is just part of my office, my looms are the other part, but they are not nailed to the wall! Oh, and then there is the area where I keep my stash, and my books, and.............come to think of it, my office is mostly the whole house.

Don't you love these colorful nylon loopers that I am using as choke ties. Another great idea from my overshot guru - Jeff!!

This warp is going to be the Rosey Star overshot draft that I told you about on my 9/14/2012 post.

Counting At The Warping Board

I have decided on two projects. I will be putting a warp on the 10 shaft Macomber and a warp on the 8 shaft Baby Wolf. So I will be at the warping board for a while.

When I wind a warp, I will count out five ends at the bottom of the warping board and then slide them aside, I do this five times. I now have five bundles of five, so that is fifty ends.

In this photo I have done this twice and put the 100 ends in a looper. I now have three bundles of five (30 ends) and have counted out 5 more (10 ends). So I have a total of 40 ends.  When I finish this count of fifty, I will put them in the looper too. Giving me 150 ends.

I learned this way of counting from my good friend and weaving teacher Jeff R. It works for me!

FYI, blue curtains are woven in 4 shaft huck.

Warp wound

Warp is wound and I am using a really great tip I got from Kathy H. (She got it from Jeff R.) They are pot holder loopers! Not the cotton ones, but the nylon ones. They work great and I have been using them with all kinds of fibers and they do not slip or loosen until I want them to.
