Rug- all over again

I have decided that I have enough warp and wefts left to do one more repeat. I have gone to the right side of my warp and will now follow the diagonal line across to the left. (see yellow pin)

This may turn out to be a big pillow instead of a 'rug'. I think I saw a treadling error way-way back near the beginning...... but this is for fun, so I will continue to 'learn as I go' !!!

Rug- nearing left edge

As I near the left edge, following my threading, I must decide if I will do another repeat. This is where it gets tricky for me. Can I figure out where the twill edge is that I started with is... or will I pick the correct block and weave another diagonal across? I will need to think on this!!

Rug - Cups and Saucers or Wheels and Tables

The fun thing about overshot is the different names of the designs. One region will call it Cups and Saucers and another region will call it Wheel of Fortune. Some of the names of overshot drafts are: Cross of Tennessee, Christmas Rose, Tennessee Trouble, Blooming Leaf of Mexico, and Gertrude's Fancy. One of my favorites is Wandering Vine also know as Cats Tracks and Snails Tails.

I have now gone past the half way point of one full repeat of my design of Cups and Saucers. If you can see the yellow pin head, you will see which diagonal line I am following to square my design.

My wheels (or cups) should be round, and my tables (or saucers) should be square. This next photo shows the very center of one repeat.

I am following the diagonal line that is running through the center of the table on the left. The "X" is marking the center of the threading that I am following.

*OK, .... The line of blocks I am following goes through the center of the table on the left. If I only pay attention to the block I am following, the other parts of the design take care of themselves. (6:45 am)!

Dentist Socks

No weaving today, but did get the dentist socks done. I hope he will find them wild enough!

Rug - Tromp As Writ

I am weaving on the diagonal of my overshot threading. Some times this is called 'weaving as drawn in' or 'tromp as writ'. I am not weaving as drawn in per thread by thread, but rather as per block. My harness combinations or blocks in my threading determine which block to weave next, and how many shots I will need to square that block.

See the yellow pin that helps me keeps me on the diagonal.

The design develops as if by magic!
Because I have chosen to have my tabby thread the same size as the pattern thread, the warp ends are adding to the overall design.

Rug - On The Diagional

OK, now that the knee is feeling a bit better, I think I will just play around with the rest of this warp. Since I don't know much about weaving rugs, I feel like I can do as I please. I am using the same size wool for tabby and pattern. If I were weaving for a coverlet, I would use the same size thread as the warp for tabby.

I am attempting to weave this overshot threading 'on the diagional'. The idea is to weave the overshot blocks according to your threading. If you do it right, you don't have written directions, you follow the blocks across, one by one.

The yellow pin head helps me know which block I have just finished so I can go to the next one.

According to A Handweaver's Workbook by Heather G. Thorpe "Many of the old colonial designs, especially those for coverlets, were woven so that each block which occurred on the diagonal of the design became a square, hence the term square the diagonal."

The last block was on treadle three and woven five times, the next block will be either treadle two or four. I see that it must be treadle two and I will weave it three times. This next block shares a thread with the last block. I will move the pin after I finish each block.

Knitting for Family

Not able to treadle, yet, so I have been knitting. I found this lovely yarn at the big box store in my town. They usually don't have a very good selections of yarns, so I was glad to find it. It's 53% wool and 47% acrylic listed as size 4 (medium). I am sure some family member will see this in December.
